End of Soul Train on Christmas Eve 1977

12

On the tape containing Lawrence Welk’s Christmas show, not only was the local news recorded after the show, but the recording was started a few minutes early getting the last few minutes of Soul Train. Yes, WJKW in Cleveland aired Soul Train and Lawrence Welk back-to-back- what an interesting combination. After some random dancing in the studio, we get Brick doing “Happy” (thank you, content ID matching), then a commercial for Capitol Clothing which seems to have been made just for airing during Soul Train, True Value with their 70s jingle (anyone know where I can find a clean copy of that music with no voiceovers?), a WJKW promo spot with Santa Claus (which aired several times just during the 2 hours recorded here), show closing with a local voiceover (this always annoyed the hell out of me but sure beats having on-screen crap during entire shows like many stations do now!), commercial for The Sound Chamber stereo store with Jim Coyne which I’ve already uploaded separately, promo for airing of “Miracle on 34th Street” then both a Christmas-themed and regular station ID before starting the Lawrence Welk Show.

Many of the moves that constituted “break dancing” appear to have been derived from the dances that originated within Russia and the Ukraine, and the European Jewish community (if one saw old clips of the Soviet Army Chorus and Band as seen within: watch?v=BvnJS_zkaMY – or at the very least, the 1943 film “Lady of Burlesque” with Barbara Stanwyck, as seen within: watch?v=IOibSeDyrMo ).

P.S. The voiceover heard over the closing credits was veteran WJW-TV/WJKW-TV announcer Andy Hale.

Is it just me, or does that TV8 Christmas Tree stinger remind you of a certain cable network from that same period?

Keep up the good work, Jess.

Would anyone know which stations, if any, aired “Soul Train” and “Hee Haw” back to back? Now THERE would’ve been a combo . . . ;)

@wmbrown6 Since both shows were in syndication, it would vary from market to market where they were scheduled. I remember WTOL here in Toledo having Hee-Haw on at 7PM Saturdays. Some stations often stuck Soul Train often anywhere ranging from the afternoon to the wee hours of the night.

@wmbrown6 I have another tape from the same people that starts with Lawrence Welk, then the news and Public Square (a local public-affairs type show) then Hee Haw, so that’s at least pretty close! (Uploading the newscast from that tape today.)

@eyeh8nbc – “Hee Haw” and “Welk” combos were more common in some markets – after all, Roy Clark of the former show had a big country hit in ’72 with “The Lawrence Welk / Hee Haw Counterrevolutionary Polka.” This is why I didn’t mention that combo, instead wondering about “Soul Train”/”Hee Haw” because of WJKW’s “Soul Train”/Welk back-to-back.
